Dr. Michael D. Choby, Principal
Dr. Choby has experience working with students as an administrator, teacher, advisor, mentor, and coach. Prior to accepting the role as the High School Principal at his alma mater, Dr. Choby was an assistant principal at both Norwin High School and Kiski Area Intermediate School. Prior to becoming an administrator, Dr. Choby taught Physics, Chemistry, and Physical Science at Norwin High School. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached football and wrestling at the varsity level and was the Senior Class Advisor.
His educational background includes being a proud Norwin High School graduate before going on to earn his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics/Secondary Education from Grove City College. He then earned his Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Pittsburgh in addition to a Dual Certificate in Curriculum and Instruction / K-12 Principal. Dr. Choby completed his doctorate in Educational Leadership at Liberty University.
His dissertation focused on the experience of mentoring at-risk high school students through the perspective of Student Assistance Program (SAP) Core Team members. Jack Mezirow’s transformative learning theory provided context to understand the internal developments of the mentors. Interviews, focus groups, and a writing activity produced layers of personal and professional transformation including varying degrees of depth, breath, enhancement, challenge, and future growth that combined to describe the essence of mentoring at-risk high school students.
Dr. Choby and his wife Kristy live in North Huntingdon with their four daughters and son. In addition to spending time with his family, Dr. Choby is passionate about serving at his church, traveling to Haiti/Dominican Republic on mission trips, spending time in the outdoors, reading, and engaging in Norwin community events.
